Finchingfield Guildhall Restoration

Project Description

The Building fell into disrepair and following the second world war attempts were made to restore the site. Unfortunately inappropriate materials were used, and architectural details were covered up. In 2008 the Finchingfield Guildhall trust was formed to save the site from dereliction. Expert craftsmen were employed using ancient techniques, and local materials were sourced.

The Challenge

English Oak with full traceability was specified for all the repairs and replacements including Green structural Oak, Matching Joinery and flooring Oak in traditional wide boards, split Oak staves and riven plaster laths all to match as closely to the original as possible.

The Results

In keeping with its original purpose, the building is now a stimulating heritage based facility for all, preserving another of our Timber framed buildings for many centuries to come…
