The huge ‘curtain walls’ of Framlingham castle built during the late 12th to early 13th century, and then repaired and modernised during the 15th century, support a famous ‘wall walk way.’ The access to the wall walk needed replacement.

The Challenge
The new stairs were designed as a tower stair with short flights and landings around vertical seasoned English oak structural members. Careful selection was required to find the wide and thick treads, also structurally graded main columns that were to be laced together with stainless steel flitch plates to create this long-lasting access to the wall walk.
The Results
The finished stair tower with its strong vertical lines helps to show the sheer height of the ancient masonry behind but also in a truly sympathetic and ‘in keeping’ way.
